I think you're pretty close Linda, but the front row far right looks more like Vickie Hawkins. But the person between Donna and Vickie is still a mystery!
You guys are goooood! I do not remember her last name, but I believe the girl's first name between Donna & Vickie was Earlene. Does that ring any bells with anyone?
Linda, It was, in fact, sixth grade and if I've done my calendar math correctly, that was 1965-66.
Earlene..one of the Mellenthin twins? I want to mention that I was grocery shopping with my daughter and grand daughter today. A lady with her beautiful granddaughter in the shopping cart struck up a conversation with us. Then the moment of recognition hit, it was Cheryl Davis Staicoff! I knew she looked very familiar but didn’t make the connection right away, so luckily she said something first. Funny how I haven’t seen hardly anyone but since the blogs and newsletters I never know who I’ll bump into.
By the way, Helen. Considering that your grandbaby's favorite picture of you was taken at some point in time away from my iced tea - I don't believe you have a leg to stand on with the wig/tea excuse anymore!
Calling Dr. Steve, How'd the poetry reading in Ohio go? Or did you sel so many books that you can't even talk to us anymore? JOKING!
Ladies & anonymous, I also spoke with Cheryl last evening! She mentioned that the mystery Earlene was a Barks twin. But the name, Mellenthin, sounds familiar to me, too. Will we ever know for sure??? Yessiree, Linda. That's our gal pal, Vickie Hawkins, with the bubble gum about to pop on her face. I can see the resemblance to Ruthanne Rives, though, so you weren't out in left field with that guess. Ruthanne, weren't you part of the "James Gang" (James Street gang) or has my memory totally failed me??? Great to catch up with you and David, by the way. I remember last talking with David years ago when my former employer, Laclede Credit Union, did some printing business with Jade; must have been right after you opened for business. Helen, I have to agree with your granddaughter because that picture is a hoot!
Isa comin'.......was too busy atthe dinner table yesterday to even fire up the ole 'puter.......my sis is livaing in Eswardsville now & working for Olin........they lived north of Bethalto a while.....then in East Alton or Wood River a while then moved to Blackwell, OK a few years now back to Madison county....I'll pass this site to her so she can ck it out......I have her address at work....hope everyone had a great turkey day!!
BOMBERS was the correct name for Bethalto Grade School. Who can tell us the correct mascot name for Cottage Hills, Forest Homes and Meadowbrook Grade Schools?
I believe that's correct, Bill.....I remember voting on it about 4-5 grade....& Where's Forest Homes at there.....they were in there....Rudy Papa was their coach...Joe Thomas?...& I know I'm missin' others.....damn that was a long time ago.....I remember playin' flag foot ball out there....& of course I worked for good ole school Dist 8 thru those later years.....& worked in all those buildings....repairing broken windows....workin' on the roofs....does anyone remember 'Crackpot Carson' giving everyone in the class swats?
Oh, yes. Mr. Carson. Lined us all up through the coat room and swatted each of us as we went through. Do you remember what provoked it? Can you imagine Roley-Poley getting away with that today?
And, do you know that Mr. Carson's fifth grade classroom is currently the master bedroom for Austin & Margaret Opp? Austin remodeled the entire grade school as his primary residence. Just off his family room is a balcony looking over the gymnasium. Too cool!
Here's what I see in my crystal ball, there's some clouds and then Robin Wills & Bill Grainger, other proud Phi Sigma Epsilon brothers carrying on the traditions through Phi Sigma Kappa...more clouds... Bill Robinson, Big Brother to Jim Holtwich, Big Brother to Austin Opp...more clouds, thicker clouds...I see LaVeta Opp Kirby celebrating her birthday with Bill Robinson...more clouds, really thick clouds...can't see the relationship connection with Uncle Coach Gary Wintjen...thick, dark clouds. Poof! The light goes out.
Bill, If I ever knew we shared the same birthday, I had completely forgotten. But I do remember a nickname you had for me in the 4th grade. "Mother Hubbard" and mine for you was "William Goat". How time flies. I'll drink to your good health on our birthday!!
La Veta good to see you on the Blog and As I recall and I think this to be correct, you, I and Mr Stutz, all shared the same Birthday!
Gwen pretty decent crystal ball, but a little hazy. Jim was not my little brother, Robin Wills was my little brother...and as we have determined there are several CMHS alums who attended Eastern Illinois that called Phi Sig's brothers! I wanted to say name 5 but didn't want it to be too hard of a question. Now I know, if you are going to stump this Blog you have to go for a more difficult subject.
Austin...er, I mean, my crystal ball gave me the names of the Phi Sig brothers, as well as the incorrect detail about Jim. Or could I have misunderstood? Naaa. My little brother, Neil, works with Austin. They are currently remodeling the Opp residence again at the old grade school.
Is Jerome Wintjen in Hartford any kin to Lucy/Gary? I, too, remember Lucy at the little store. Any pictures of her that we can post to the blog to jog some more memories?
Gwen you should have let it go, I was giving you credit for being very clairvoyant. That is not to bad for Austin to remember that much for all he went through in his younger years.

Oh, that profile pic happens to by my grandbaby's favorite picture of me..lol.
Earlene Barks according to the 1968 Royal yearbook (8th grade for us). Or, was it her twin sister, Evalene Barks? And, will we EVER know for sure?
So, Gwen - all the other names were correct except for the Ruthanne which was really Vicky?
By the way, Helen. Considering that your grandbaby's favorite picture of you was taken at some point in time away from my iced tea - I don't believe you have a leg to stand on with the wig/tea excuse anymore!
Calling Dr. Steve, How'd the poetry reading in Ohio go? Or did you sel so many books that you can't even talk to us anymore? JOKING!
I remember Earlene and Evalene..don't know why I was thinking thier last name was Mellenthin.
Ladies,
I also spoke with Cheryl Staicoff last evname=

Dr. Steve,
I think that the number of cheerleaders was directly related to the number of moms that were willing to sew the outfits.
Now, who can tell what the "B" stood for? It was not "Bethalto."
Happy Thanksgiving to All!
Very good!
Gold star for Dr. Steve!
Glad to see that you survived the turkey day eating frenzy.
Where's TALK? I thought he in particular would enjoy this photo.

BOMBERS was the correct name for Bethalto Grade School. Who can tell us the correct mascot name for Cottage Hills, Forest Homes and Meadowbrook Grade Schools?
Go Wildcats!
Cottage Hills.
I remember the Meadowbrook Indians.
For sure stood for Bombers, heck we picked the mascot name if my memory serves me right, in like 3rd or 4th grade.

Can anyone name Three CMHS alumni who were Austin Opps Fraternity Brothers in College, Hint one of them shares a Birthday with Austin's sister.
And one is related to Dr. Steve
I am betting Dr Steve can get this one correct. I know he can figure out two of them for sure...
Those three are correct dr steve, and another correct answer would have been Jim Holtwich
Here's what I see in my crystal ball, there's some clouds and then Robin Wills & Bill Grainger,

Ok where's the baby picture contest?
And I do remember Lucy, she sold me many Pepsis, twinkees, ice cream sandwiches, and M and Ms.
