Both of these round ball pix are something the whole school and town could & should be proud of...we had some damn good teams, fans, cheerleaders, parents.....the whole shebang....not many can say they've accomplished as much!
That's Jerry McCann, not McGown, right? All the girls were in love with him! WT(clap clap) JH (clap clap) Wilbur Trimpe (clap clap) Junior High (clap clap) WT JH Wilbur Trimpe Junior High!!!
Does anyone remember the state basketball tournament where we got stranded? Around 1968 time?? We got stuck in a blizzard. We stayed in a huge mansion (at least it seemed like it back then) that had a basketball court in the attic...I think it was Monticello. We were stuck in cars for awhile due to whether and played cards. Does anyone remember that?
That was a great run to that tourney. Anybody remember the snow storm and getting stranded between champaign and monticello stuck in the snow? How about that house we stayed in in Monticello, wow was that exciting for a bunch of eighth grade kids! I am with you Gwen that year and those events and these people are all etched in my mind..for ever. Yes it is Jerry McCann, papers made errors even back then!
Did the spectator bus get cancelled because of the storm? I remember Donna Aljets and I completely blubbering because we weren't going to be able to attend the tournament. Our Moms got on the phone with the state police for the weather forecast and road condition, and ended up driving us to Monticello. Good grief! Tell me if I am remembering this correctly: We lost the semi-final game by 1 or 2 points in the final seconds of the game. A questionable foul was called on Steve Shaw, and the referee even later commented to Steve or someone that he knew the call was questionable. The mansion that we stayed at was called Allerton House. It had big marble fireplaces & secret hallways. Great memories!
Yup.....the Allerton house....I looked it up on the net not too long ago & there was a home page but not much else......but a pretty neat place..seems it's associated or part of UofI...it also had neat gardens with statues. I remember getting stranded......some of us players helped a lady get out of a snow back....then she just drove right back into it.....we got 3rd at State that year....pretty good for the little town in Madison County...I didn't know all the gals had the hots for Jerry McCann...but then I was pretty clueless in those days(some days now aren't much better.....;-)....but I knew him well......I worked in his office & could sign his name(with his permission) as well as he could.....made a lot of keys for lockers.....you're forgiven, Sheri...;-)
Gwen, I too remember these boys faces just like it was yesterday. Talk, I wasn't in love with Jerry McCann, but I also don't remember this mansion, yet I'm pretty sure I was there. Sheri, was I there?? You guys are amazing with your details of events! In the words of Bob Hope: Thanks for the Memories.
I used to work in Jerry McCann's office, too. I still have a necklace he gave me for Christmas one year. The worst and best part of that job was witnessing the swats. I hated to see anyone get a swat but didn't really mind the view - but, hey, that's me. Also, collected milk money for awhile.

I meant to type weather, not whether. Sorry.
One more thing. I know where about six of those guys are today, but where are all the others?

I forgot to mention. The necklace was an hour glass timer with pink sand. He told that it was a "kissing" timer. Nice guy.
A ha...he was a flirt. And I thought I was special!!!
