The Bethalto Homecoming is Just Around the Corner!
Just a quick note to remind you that the Bethalto Homecoming is just around the corner and you can gather with various classmates at the American Legion Beer Tent again this year on Saturday evening, August 30.
Did you know that the annual homecoming celebration was first started to honor the soldiers of World War I? This year when you think of the Bethalto Homecoming, let's also remember our military from all the wars and conflicts since WWI.
I also read that this is the 79th annual Bethalto Homecoming. It's certainly been a constant part of my entire life.
When I was much younger, I HAD to go to the Homecoming. It was critical. After all, you could meet so many boys! The atmosphere was great and riding the rides was a lot of fun. Spending time with the boys and my friends, taking my kid(s) - natural and step to this yearly tradition, and enjoying a corndog while listening to the music. It's all good.
Although nowadays (when I'm not too lazy) all I do is to have someone drop me off near the funnel cake stand and drive around the area until they make their way back to the "drop point". Usually, I've managed to purchase several funnel cakes and made it back just in time to jump in the car and off we go to enjoy the treat of the year. SCORE!
Anyhoo, just a reminder to everyone that there WILL be classmates at the American Legion beer tent on Saturday, August 30, if you'd like to stop by and visit.
Unfortunately, I will be on vacation then and will not be able to attend. I know - I was doing drugs or something when I made my non-refundable reservations! Darn it. I couldn't believe I did that but I sure did get a great deal - less than $250 for a roundtrip ticket to Rhode Island!

I remember the spinning card, but I'm stunned to learn it was for non-artists.
Kinda like finding out there's no Easter Bunny. (sorry Deb Miller)
Ah Lo, why'd ya have to go an say that. Well tuff, I'm still gonna hide my own Easter eggs. it's sooo much fun when I get to find one.
Ah, yes, I remember the mouse game. These days, wouldn't that be considered cruelty to animals? I loved that game though. How 'bout throwing pennys on the plates? And who could forget the plastic ducks with the numbers on the bottom swimming round and round? Loved the rides too. And the food...fried fish sandwiches, cotton candy, and candy apples. Remember the old bandstand? Brings back many fond memories. Wish I could be there. I wanta go home. I'll get up there one day.
Me too, Carla. Now I am homesick as well. Anyone remember when they used to sell fish sandwiches from a stand, across from Kutter's and the Lutheran church, in Cottage Hills?? Those were the best.
Hey, don't forget to post pics, if you get any, I always enjoy those.
Carla. that old band stand is still there, unimproved since it was built, we would like for you to come back too. I will get to hang out for the first time in 20 years. I actually get to take my kids....Oh wait,They are 28 and 24, guess they would probably rather take themselves. Oh well, anyone who is up for creating a crowd at the beer tent Saturday night, I will try to limp there.
Several people have responded to my mass email regarding this particular blog for the Homecoming.
David Zumbaum will see everyone at the Homecoming as will Sheri Dyer Shoff even though Sheri's visit will be a short one since she'll have visitors in that weekend.
Scott and Donna (Piltz) Naylor; Bob & Mona (Holcomb) Meyers; and, Tim & Carla Golden will not be able to make it this year.
I certainly hope that everyone who does attend will take plenty of pictures and send me a copy for the blog.
Debbi - why will you have to limp there? Did you hurt yourself?
Yes Linda, my foot sideswiped a post that appeared out of nowhere, I might add. Didn't put a scratch on my new Yamaha but my foot didnt get so lucky.Broke a cunniform bone(one of those on the top of your foot) should have broken my ankle but my bones are still good surprisingly. I am hoping to have the boot off by homecoming.
