MARCH ROLL CALL

St. Patrick’s Day occurs in March and I was wondering how the phrase “The luck of the Irish” came about. It seems a little ironic considering their history has been full of unfortunate events.
The first week in February was pretty lucky for various members of my family. My daughter’s boyfriend won nearly $500 on a 50/50 drawing at Trivia Night. My sister and her family were here from Tucson; they headed for the boat, along with my brother, raked in a near total of $8,000. I didn’t go with them and wouldn’t of won anyway…I’m just not that lucky as far as winning cash. I won an elephant shaped wicker table and various contests here and there but no big money makers. My husband did win a car several years ago. We sold it and used the money for a family vacation. My sister also won a trip to Vegas by winning a costume contest...wearing a costume that I made!
So, how is your luck? Have you ever won anything? Everyone who posts to this will get their name in the hat for a chance to win a prize. No cash but it is a photo mug (pictured) that I hope you will enjoy.
I have to apologize for not getting all the photos from the blog snagged and copied into the collage but I think there is a good sampling. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I won a trip to Hawaii in 1994 from KLOU radio. Then just last Friday I won $500 on a penny machine at the boat (my husband would call it a $1.25 machine)
I've won a few bucks on the lottery here and there. I did win a $500 Super Bowl pool at a bar when I lived in California. I think I was pretty lucky to end up with the great gal I married. Being half Irish, I've always enjoyed St. Patrick's Day and the suds that come with it. Yes, Golden is Irish. My Dad's parents came over here from Ireland.
I've won a few minor prizes in drawings and a few $$$ on scrath-off lottery tickets once in a while. I wouldn't consider myself to be lucky but I am blessed in many ways.
Erin Go Brah! Yes, I have some Irish ancestery and I do think the phrase "the luck of the Irish" originated due to the Irish people being able to overcome many adverse situations throughout history, yet still came out with their spirits intact. Speaking of spirits, who will be drinking green beer on the 17th? How about green grits and eggs? Please don't ask me what a grit is. lol
I won a lovely ornament around the holidays, so maybe it has something to do with Helen passing luck around.
Otherwise, I would have to say my luck has been cloaked in adversity. The Luck of the Irish must be in their ability to survive and make their own luck!
Oh yeah, I forgot I won $1,000 on a scratch off lottery ticket. If you win over $600, you have to go either to Fairview or Springfield to get your money and since we were on our way to Springfield when I scratched it, no problem! My motto: You can win if you don't play!
You're a sweetie, Tim. What a lovely thing to say about having won Carla's heart.
I made some points with that one!!!
I have been lucky more than I can count. I will be in Cabo San Lucas for St Patty's day, I will be in Scottsdale right befor that and Vegas just before that. If I can get out of Vegas without losing any money...yea right like that will happen, I will be lucky!
If you gamble enough you eventually win something, trouble with that, it can hardly be winning when the investment is more than you get back! I have won several jackpots, just don't ask me how much I spent trying to win them. Don't ever bet a dollar you need for anything other than entertainment! So I agree. The best way to have good luck gambling, is to be lucky enough not to start. Happy Saint Patricks day to everyone.
I got lucky when I won a blog drawing and received a nice painted item from Helen. I also think I got lucky when I married Frank.
Luck?.....hmmmmm ….generally I’d say we each pretty much make our own luck…gotta be pluggin that machine or scratchin’ to win, right?..... & it’s always seemed to me that when I got in a hurry bad things(luck) just seemed to happen. I rarely play the machines or lottery…my luck at that is usually better when let someone else play w/ my money….there’s several places where I always do the shake-a-day but I never win….just feed the kitty….;-) Don’t think there’s any Irish bones in this body. I did win one of Helen’s blog ornaments that was kuhl….. Linda thought you might enjoy hearing about the cake I was lucky enough to win a week ago last Thursday….kind of a long story…how much room does this blog give ya?....guess we’ll find out…..;-)
I drive down to Cody, Wyoming, fairly often to do work…home of Buffalo Bill & just east of Yellowstone Park…a real tourist town but a lot of nice folks. I usually try to go on Thursdays & make a loop, going to Lovell & Powell first & whatever is along the way….then if I can get over to Cody by around 6PM the Cody Eagles, FOE 818, has dinner…& of course a friendly bar to whet my thirst b4 the drive home. The dinner isn’t anything fancy….they usually take turns cooking so it’s always something different…..usually $5…comes w/ desert…& they offer ya a 2 for 1 drink ticket for after dinner….wot a deal….& usually 2 or 3 of the ladies will make cakes that they raffle off. I’d say usually they have about 30 for dinner. I hadn’t been to Cody for a while & needed to go down to Casper(more towards Denver)….@ 300 miles one way & had several things there to do. I wasn’t sure how long it would take but knew the drive would take a while….but thought I might be able to go to Casper on Wed…& try to come back Thur. through Worland & do one & hit Cody & do a few that had been waiting but weren’t urgent. Since I wasn’t sure where I’d spend the night I didn’t want to call any of the Cody jobs ahead in case it was late when I got there.
So off I go to Casper….the main job I needed to do there was on a plasma TV & the warranty company had the wrong model number… soooo…. I checked it out & knew I’d have to take it back to Billings to fix….the other jobs went fairly fast & I was ready to head out by about dark….drove to Thermopolis(the big thing there is the Hot Springs)..spent the night…did the one in Worland the next AM & then drove to Cody by early afternoon & did what I could there…& even tho I was fairly burned out after driving & working for 2 days I made it to 818 in plenty of time for dinner. I been havin’ dinner there for years & almost always buy the raffle tix, but had never won a cake. They drew my number on the first draw…..there were 2 choc. layer cakes there to choose from….one had cherries & sour cream icing around the edge…..mmmmm…..breakfast!.....but I still got a long drive to get home..almost 100 miles…& I usually stop in Belfry on the way back too(that’s another story)…..so I told em I didn’t really wanna take the whole cake back to Billings but I would donate it back to em to raffle again, or whatever….except for one piece….they thought that was hilarious….so they cut me out a piece that was almost ¼…& put it in a go-box for me. She really didn’t want to close the lid on it because of smashing the cherries but I told her it was all going to the same place…..;-) They were quite happy…they raffled of their cakes & got most of one back to sell pieces for their bingo night….& I had a fine breakfast the next AM….. So I was lucky that night….but actually I’m a really lucky guy…gots lots of good friends…most of my family is still in good shape….get to do regular road trips in a pretty scenic area of the country….no boss lookin’ over my shoulder & I can go & work as hard/long as I want & still have a good time….get to float the river….gonna get to go to our class reunion this summer & see all the old gang….yeah….I be lucky………
Talk,
Fun story...gave me goosebumps at the end there. :-)
You'll all be happy to learn that individual posts do not have a specific size limit, but very large posts may run up against the page size limit. Individual pages (the main page of the blog, or archive pages) are limited to 1 MB in size. This will allow for a few hundred pages of text. There is also no limit on the number of posts you can have on one blog; they will all be saved unless manually delete. So, there's PLENTY of room for EVERYONE to make a comment on the March Roll Call.
Bottom line, Dennis, you are now the honorary winner of the special prize for the longest CMHS blog comment so far. The cake is in the mail.
Carla, I love grits! I think they might be good for you too.
Ann and Debbie , I feel complimented that you think you got lucky winning one of my little ornies.
Bill I agree with you. I’m not a gambler..I hate losing even a little bit. The most gambling I do is on the claw machines at Walmart. Trying to win a cheap stuffed animal that I could just go into the store and buy off the shelf. lol
Talk, I’ve been to Cody before and I enjoyed that place. Was only there for a day. I’d say the last part of your comment isn’t about luck but more about being BLESSED. I think anyone that enjoys the simple things in life is very fortunate indeed!
My ex-husband used to say he could tell a Northerner from a Southerner by what they put on their grits. If they added salt and pepper, they're from the South. If they add sugar, they're from the North!
As far as luck goes, that's all fairytales even though I can usually find a four-leaf clover very easily. If you ever find a four-leaf clover, don't pick it. Instead, trace it to the roots. Then, look intently in an area approximately 1-1/2 feet in diameter outward from that point. You'll usually find at least one more 4-leaf, if not more. One summer, I dug up an area that was full of 4-leafs, 5-leafs and 6-leafs. I planted it in a terrarium (that CAN'T be spelled right). The plan was to grow 4-leaf clovers. Hey, it could work! I forgot and left it in a bay window one hot day and the sun fried my luck! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
simple is wunnerful as long as it gets the job done.... grits?.....I'm a biscuits & gravy kinna guy....;-)....but one of my mottos is.....I think from a John Wayne movie..."you can call me anything you like....just don't call me late for dinner.....Ma'am"....;-) Been real busy....did the Lovell, Powell, Cody loop today again..... got lucky/blessed;-) again & was done by about 3:30PM....dinner at Eagles 818 was corned beef & cabbage...smelled good... & I have no doubt it was excellent....& I like that particular dish.....once or twice around St. Paddy's Day....but know I'll be havin' it a couple more times by next weekend...so I passed...walked down the alley & had a rib eye at Proud Cut Saloon....tasty!.... their catch phrase is 'Kick ass cowboy quisine'....& they have a sign up that I've seen in the area associated w/ Calamity Jane(who also lived in Billings at one time)....'Well behaved women do not make history"...;-P....yup..I be lucky AND blessed.....;-) ...& watchin' the mail....;-) g'nite, folks...
Dennis, you've got me hankerin' for a road trip. carla,I'm trying to work up an appetite for grits, but they'd have to be southern style for me (according to Linda's ex definition..and my Georgia son in law agrees with that north/south grit explanation)I'll be passing on the green ones though. ugh! Does anyone remember when McDonalds would have the green milkshakes for St. Pats? I hated the color green, so during our senior year a few of my "friends" dared me to drink a green milkshake. I did of course..but paid for it later. I've sworn off of artificially green colored food ever since.
Linda, I will try that four leaf clover hunt with Frankie and see if we find more than one.Stuff like that thrills a 10 year old...and obviously his "old mom" too.
I've never won anything to speak of, but I do feel fortunate having a great family, reuniting with all of you on the blog and like Dennis, I, too, look forward to seeing everyone at this summer's reunion.
Linda, you and my husband must be the king and queen of 4 (+)leaf clovers. He has no trouble finding them.
Lois, glad to see you sounding chipper..what no green beer for tomorrow?..yuk.LOL it doesn't sound good at all.
Talk ,"Well behaved women do not make history" sounds like a really good MySpace headline to me.
I'll do the drawing tomorrow night and see who has the luck of the Irish then. Still have a day left so if someone has anything to say you still have time!
Talk,
Sounds like you are blessed with a taste for enjoying life to the fullest.
Lois, you may not have been "lucky" by winning material things but you are blessed with the joy of family. : - )
Trivia: Savannah is expecting over 800,000 for the St. Patrick's Day parade and "drunk" fest. No thanks! I may just watch the parade from the comfort of my own recliner. I like a party but not with 800,000 strangers.
This month luck is following Gwennie and Tim Golden! Congratulations and I will get those mugs in the mail later this week. Thanks to all who posted and watch for next month's Roll Call. Helen
Congratulations Gwinnie and Tim.
:-)
I won at the lottery once around $1600.00 as Tim said my luck came in different ways. Hi all
Halleujah - new blood!
Welcome, Debbie! What have you been up to since graduation?
These Irish eyes are smiling!! Maybe I do have a little Irish luck. I'll drink some toasts to all of you when I receive the mug.
Thanks Helen, I received the unique mug. A toast: Here's to all of my CMHS classmates. May our reunion find everyone healthy and happy. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.
Thanks Lucky Tim!
I share your sentiment.
