April Roll Call

The April Roll Call winners are...drum roll, please...
Helen Eyers & Brent Augustson

Your key chains are in the mail!

Thanks to EVERYONE who participated with comments this month..57 to date.
Great question this month, Helen.
How will we top that one?!

Jeremiah was a bullfrog,
Was a good friend of mine,
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine,
And he always had some mighty fine wine.

...Not my favorite song from 1971 but one that conjures up an old memory...sitting in the CMHS multi-purpose room and Joy To The World is blaring from the jukebox, probably for the 4th or 5th time in a row. Barb Turner is sitting across from me swearing how she is "sick and tired of hearing that song!" It’s funny how I think I remember very little from those days, yet a silly song will pull me backward to a moment in time. Are there any songs that take you to another place and time? Here’s a reminder of what we listened to in the early 70’s.

Everyone who posts to this will get their name in the hat for a chance to win a CMHS keychain. Again, there will be two names pulled to win.

By-the-way: Who sang Joy To The World? Yes, the version we all know was made popular by Three Dog Night.

Who wrote the song? Country, folk and pop legend, Hoyt Axton, wrote this song, as well as another TDN hit, Never Been To Spain. He also co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel with Elvis.

With the mention of Dr. Bop, thought you might get a kick out of my Dr. Bop album cover.

Being the humongous lover of music that I am, I could come up with a story about most of the songs on the 70-72's hit lists. So, I'll list just a few memories here: Any song of Chicago, which I saw at MRF, not once, but twice and who's song, Color My World, was played at my 1st wedding;
I Don't Know How To Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar, which I saw at The Ambassador Theatre at 1971 Christmas party with the employees from Laclede Credit Union where I worked a job that I got through Office Occupations;
American Pie by Don McLean & American Woman by The Guess Who, both 50 cent concerts that I attended at WIU where I also saw my first streaker at a Ferrante & Teicher concert;
Wedding Bell Blues, a 1969 song by the 5th Dimension that I played so much that my Mom took my record player away; Al Green's 1972 #1 hit, Let's Stay Together, which is on my Top Ten list still today.
I could go on & on.....
LOVE The Beatles!

hey hey we're the Monkees. Jill McCool and I went to a concert at Kiel to see them. We wore our mini skirts and painted flowers up our legs and on our faces(after we left the house of course)
We screamed when Davy Jones hit the stage. I scream when I see him now, but for a totally different reason.
Don't really listen to any of the old Monkee songs today, although I still feel warm and fuzzy when "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" comes on the oldies station. Back in the day...I'm guessing 69 or 70, they were GROOVY.I relive that concert every time I hear one of those songs.Makes me want to paint sumpthin'.

If you check out my profile, you'll see that my favorite song is "Joy To The World" by Three Dog Night. I have many happy memories of listening to that song on the cafeteria jukebox. That was back in the days when I was newly engaged and believed I was in love and that all was right with the world. When I hear that song, the volume gets cranked up!
Another favorite song is "Joy To The World" that you'll find in your hymn book and I love it for a totally different reason.
I have fond memories of "Iron Man" complete with black lights and "Brown Sugar" while riding with a motorcycle gang...of people! And, while the Beatles were, well, they were the Beatles - Elvis was my man. I actually saw him in person at Kiel Auditorium when I was 16, I think. When was it Cheryl?

I LOVED the Guess Who, the Carpenters (no snickering please!) and like Gwen, Chicago. You liked Color My World, I was into "25 or 6 to 4" I also liked Bread a lot. Those were just a few. Boy, you're right--it DOES bring back memories. Lois, the thought of you & Jill screaming about Davy Jones made me crack up! Is she still around the area? Haven't thought of her in a LOT of years.

My album collection included The Who, Tommy, Jethro Tull, Simon and Garfunkel, Chicago and others. I liked Bread. How about Traffic? I remember trying to play some Traffic, Color My World, Saturday In The Park on the piano. Jim Morrison? How about Joe Cocker? He was on the jukebox in the cafeteria. Who remembers the guys that did Simon and Garfunkel songs from C.M.? I remember when Dennis Bottoms got his first banjo. He can play anything. Travis, Dennis and who? did some great bluegrass.

The other day my 21 year old mentioned how much she loved Chicago..what's old is new.
Much better than Buckcherry or as I mistakenly called them "Chuckberry". My daughter is still laughing about that one. Oh yeah and I heard that David Cassidy was hot for an old guy.LOL
..my best MRF experience was Elton John before the wild costumes.

I remember the "lawn" concerts at SIUE and seeing Grand Funk RR. How about the Stones? Never was a big Beatles fan. It's funny but I can associate certain songs with a certain time period. I was a big Monkees fan back in 7th grade. I'm still a rock mama and probably still be listening to it when I'm 80...lol

The Monkees tunes I liked were Last Train to Clarksville, Red Rubber Ball & Steppin' Stone ...our guys that did S & G...one was Mike Marburger...hung out w/ him some....& he hung w/ Gary Dodd but not sure if it was Gary that sang w/ him.....might be able to find some pix in the yearbooks & figure it out. Local banjo great John King gave me some banjo lessons way back.....man that dude can pick! I love bluegrass & have some Flatt & Scruggs in my collection but have little doubt that I'll grow old jammin' to Ted & the rest....& now my batery is gettin' los so it must be time to wrap it up.....Later, Gang

Brent and Dennis, the guys who sang were Dave Gibbons and Mike Marburger. Here's a few to consider though I've stretched this from our junior high up to college years. Do you remember...One by Three Dog Night, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, Hey Jude by the Beatles, Doobie Brothers with Jesus Is Just Alright By Me, Monday Monday by Mamas and Papas, If A Picture Paints A Thousand Words by Bread, Crimson and Clover by Tommy James and the Shondells, Light My Fire by the Doors, House of the Rising Sun by Animals? and American Woman by The Who. Ruby by Kenny Rogers and the 1st Edition. I remember going to the Mississippi River Festival. I think one of the last ones I attended was with "Sha Na Na"...what a hoot! I remember attending "Jesus Christ Superstar" in St Louis, and loved it...a bit of controversy with some of our conservative christian friends but my folks didn't stop me.

Sheri your right with the David Gibbons and Mike I see David when I go to chew on my ins. man every once in awhile. My favorites are Moody Blues Nights inWhite Satin Tuesday Afternoon and Grand funk was the best concert i went to over at keil at MRF also, but I really like Janis ask my oldest daughter. She stayed out all night one time, mind you she was 21 so to her no big deal to me either if she would of called to let me know I was a easy MOM no curfew, and it worked, so after seh finally came home a little sore in the head and went to bed at 6:00 am I decided to clean to a little Janis at full blast she didn't come out of her room but she didn't stay out all night again without calling.

Hey Talk,
Now you're talking, no pun..hehe. Always knew you had good taste. lol
I remember hanging out in the park in the summer while Mike and Dave played guitar and sang. Gary Dodd (Fish) was always there too. He followed me around every where I went one summer. I couldn't seem to be rude and tell him to get lost...oh, well.
I can't seem to remember what group does what song but when I hear the song I know it. Some favs to this day are ZZ Top, Lynard Skynard, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn (even thought he's gone), The Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and too many more to list. Love tunes. Yep, I admit that I like bluegrass too. Can't stand rap...call me an ole fuddy duddy but to me it just ain't music. Who remembers going to the River City Music Room? My favorite times there was when Dr. Bop and the Headliners were there. fun party times.

Way to go, Debbie!!....a little 'hair of the dog' is usually a good learning experience......I thought of Dave Gibbon's name after I gave it up last night....gotta agree on the rap....don't do anything for me but I'd bet on a headache if I coudn't get away from it....seems a lot of the newer stuff is just shoutin' & bass thumpin'....& crude vocals.....I know there's some that's decent.....but give me the older stuff every time....the long version of Crimson & Clover....and Janis....gone too soon.......

I vaguely remember a camping boating trip to I think Litchfield lake one summer, Thorton, Thomas, Me, maybe Hattery, I don't recall all of the players but I do recall Thommy James and The Shondels tape being played all night, it raining all night and we got drenched.

I also remember Joe Thomas's chevy crusing at the dog n suds listening to "one is the lonliest number", and any other three dog night on that 8 track tape player.

MRF memories galore, and the tickets my dad got me for free since he worked over at SIUE. I remember a War concert there, which was the first time in my life I relized I was a minority in a big crowd of people, but it was a great concert. I too loved the Chicago concerts, and Jackson Browne was one of my favorites too.

Dr. Bop & The Headliners featuring The White Raven, The Count of Monte Cristo & Ena Anka! Yes, Carla, what a phenomenon they were in the 70's & 80's. The band still plays in the Chicagoland area today (they were from Wisconsin), but Dr. Bop is no longer with them...he died of throat cancer in February 2006. Janet & Rich Hahnenkamp owned The River City Music Room; they are current good friends of mine, but I didn't know them well back when we were hanging at The Music Room in Wood River. They also later owned Off Broadway in Alton and Cocktails in Godfrey. Rich's parents owned The East Alton Dairy at Wilshire where we used to stand in line for 20 minutes on summer evenings to get a chocolat malt.
Do you also remember another Chicagoland band that played locally...Ziggy & The Zoo? They also played at various bars in college towns, such as Macomb & Charleston.
Helen, We saw 'Buckcherry' at Argosy several months ago...he's losing some of his steam...barely made it through a couple of his songs. Saw Joe Cocker at The Pageant several years ago...fabulous concert! I'm jealous of anyone who got to see Elvis, The Beatles, The Temptations or Frank Sinatra.

Gwennie,
I was a frequent visitor of the East Alton Dairy when I lived up the street and around the corner from there in the mid 70's - the early 80's. They made real ice cream and it was soooo good.
Is Mrs. Seibolds Bakery still around? I loved their carmel rolls and cream horns. I miss that little bakery and droll when I think of all the goodies.
I don't remember Ziggy and the Zoo but I probably had too much to drink if I ever saw them. Oh, well...those were the days when I wondered how I made it home some nights. Must have had a guardian angel watching over me.

I think a lot of us had Guardian Angels and Mom's that knew how to pray.
The memories are so thick I can almost touch them. I liked them all. I do remember "parts" of a lawn concert at SIU with Three Dog Night. Yes, "parts" I had no clue what was in some of the bottles being passed around.LOL
Yes, Dennis and Travis "Rocky Top" with my country roots that especially stands out in my mind.
Oh yes, the thunder I heard when I reset one of the "Old Man's" preset buttons to KXOK. KMOX went off the air late and I thought it was'nt programed. Boy was he pissed. And, what a treat if you could pull in WLS-Chicago late at night. The Sunday Morning gospel programs.
Today, nothing's changed. Classic Country, Rock, Gospel, R&B. It's always been the music, for me. Takes me back every time. If you ever get up this way, it's KQ92 & KOOL 108.

Hey, remember "Hi Lilly Hi Lo" Mr. Prange's class. "Organized Confusion" when we re-positioned into trios to perform certain song.

Hey Cookieman,
I sure do remember Mr. Prange's class and Hi Lilly-Hi low song. That darned song is stuck in the recesses of my brain to this day. lol Oh, no...now you've done it. I won't be able to get that song out of my head for who knows how long now. Gee, thanks. Ha! Do you remember listening to some classical music in Mr. Prange's class and having to write down what our thoughs were as we listened to the music?

Another music memory takes me back to 6th grade when the song Wipe Out came out. We played that record to death.

Mini skirts, hip huggers, go-go boots, bell bottom pants, neru shirts...OMG...you know we're getting old when all the fashions of the past come back in style and haunt us once again. Just pray that polyester leisure suits don't make a comeback.

I don't recognize any of those bands you listed Gwen. When I left town I really left didn't I? Probably from 70 -72,I remember going to a place to dance that was on rt.67. I think it sat up on a hill. Does anyone remember the name of that place?
also, my favorite bluegrass band was Travis, Dennis and I think the 3rd member was Gary Null. Is that right?
I never saw the Beatles but I did see the Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes (or were they just the Supremes back then?)and Simon and Garfunkel when they performed Bridge Over Troubled Waters for the first time.
Don't remember who took me, but if you're out there, Thank you.

Anybody remember that night and the drama that night and the insuing day?

I AM GOING TO SHOOT THIS COMPUTER!!I just spent 20 minutes writing here and then the #?@%&* thing wouldn't let me publish! I truly HATE being dumber than this thing.

OK. I'm all right now, just needed to vent a little. What I originally wrote was that I was at the S & G concert woth you, Lois. Karl Kruckeberg(sp?) took you and I went with Jim Bast--probably one of the only times he actaully took me OUT! That concert @ Keil still stands out as my all-time favorite. We were in the 4th or 5th row and I remeber looking around at people while he was singing BOTW (it hadn't been released yet so no one had ever heard it) and people had tears in their eyes because it was so moving. I've been to lots of other concerts but the memory of that one is still so vivid. Of course, maybe the reason the others aren't so clear is the alcohol I consumed while attending them! Whatever. Lots of fun in the old days.

Gwen, I agree with you about Joe--I hope he comes on to defend himself, although I don't remember much about any punches or other dramas but I sure would love to hear what he's up to these days. Steve Shaw, too. Actually, there are LOTS of people I'd like to see get on this thing: Gail, Sherryl, Donna-Doo, Rhonda & so many more--YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! Come on, people, it's fun and you can start to feel connected even before the reunion. One thing I've learned here is that I missed out on knowing a whole bunch of interesting and funny people & I can't wait for the reunion to be able to get to know them better in person--are we sure one weekend is long enough??

Someone mentioned Travis, Gary & Dennis's band--they were really good. Are any of them still in the business? Someone else mentioned Tom Tarantino's band. I remember going to see them several times in some little bar in East ALton or Wood River with Donna Aljets. I think Travis played in that one, too and there was a kid who was a year or two younger than we were from CM who sang lead. They were rock, not country, but also good.
I agree with you , Bob--James TAylor was/is great. My girls have as many of his CD's as I do and love all his old stuff.

Boy, Linda--I hadn't thought of the pavilion for years. I remember I'd just moved here the summer before our 8th grade year and my folks coerced my sister(who, I'm sure, was mortified because she was so much older!)to take me up there one Saturday evening. I watched all these people dancing some sort of line dance to "A Little Bit of Soul" and thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Okay granted, Eldorado didn't have a lot going for it. Still, I get a smile on my face when I realize that a lot of the people there became very important to me and helped me to have such a terrific youth. Again, thanks.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

That can only mean a few things. One he has no desire to contact anyone from his past. or, he no longer works for us (not likely his e-mail would not work!)
He has no desire to contact me, and can't figure the blog thing out. He is really bad at e-mail, or hopefully he was on vacation this week and did not check his e-mail. I hope it was the last. If I do not hear from him next week, I will go through our Human Resource Department and have them track him down. As long as he works for Pepsi, I can track him down. He can run but he can't hide!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Too

Linda, I'm so glad you brought up the pavillion in Bethalto. I loved it there. I doubt that I missed a weekend when it was open. Rick Williams would probably deny it now, but he was quite the dancer back in the day. Randy Crotchett was another one. Al Trosley would be one of the leaders of the line dancing and any new dance on the horizon. I hoofed it there most of the time, but I think Jill McCool probably gave me a ride occasionally. She was a great dancer also. The music was always a local band and might have been the same one all the time for all I know.
Living near there would have been so great...but I bet not all the neighbors thought so!
Deb..put on some music, crank it up really loud and dance around the room. Cures the blues every time. And it's great knowing the local police on a first name basis.

Ah, yes, the pavillion dances. I don't think I missed many dances either. My dad would drop me off and pick me up. At least I got to go. Does anyone remember the dances at that old church by the grade school? Had some fun there too.

The church was turned into the Boys Club of America, and yes, they did have dances there for awhile. Good call, Carla. I had forgotten about that place even though I lived right there by it.

Bob, it was The Coliseum in Benld and the band, The Guild, (remember, "Blue Moon") was always there on the weekends? We usually stopped first at The Staunton Bowling Alley on the way up to Benld. The Coliseum Ball Room is now, sadly, an antique mall..."but when it was built in 1924 it boasted a dance hall with three bars, never mind that was in the midst of Prohibition, a three-sided balcony, and a 10,000 square foot dance floor that was the biggest from Chicago to St. Louis. It was built by Ben and Dominic Tarro, but was largely run through the years by Dom's wife, Marie, and daughter, Joyce, who took over after Dom was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1930 and who only avoided trial by winding up in the river near Springfield with concrete blocks strapped to his body." Benld always had a reputation for mafia connections and all of the strappings that come with that, i.e. prostitution, gambling, drugs...just a real fun place. :-) Of course, I was there for THE MUSIC, as I am sure, were you.

Bob, I remember that foggy night...I had ridden with Denise Amata and her boyfriend Joe something, and it was very foggy. We heard a sickening crunch and stopped, only to find that Joe had driven over a piece of the vette that had flown off, and you guys were standing next to the carnage.

Anna, if you ever talk to Denise's Joe again, tell him I said thanks for stopping. I could have used a ride to the emergency room.
