Bethalto's First Annual Fireworks Display

Bethalto had their first annual fireworks display on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the airport. (Some of you may remember the airport as the Civic Memorial Airport at the corner of Hwy 140 and Hwy 111 but it has been renamed St. Louis Regional Airport. Supposedly, this makes it easier for the pilots to know where it is. Deep sigh!) Anyway...

I heard about it on a Christian radio station and knew that the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church was supplying the fireworks so I thought it would be a smaller gathering of people. Oh - how I was wrong. I went primarily to hear the Harmon Family perform since I love their bluegrass music. The stage was set up near the hangers close to Hwy. 111. I had to park about a 10-minute walk away within the airport complex.

The music was very good and there were soooooooooo many people there. At one point, I stood up and turned around and took a couple of pictures of the "stage" crowd for the blog but that doesn't even come close to representing the number of people who were there! I left after the music was done and before the fireworks began but still got a couple of shots of the fireworks. There were cars parked all up and down Hwy. 111, and Airline Dr. and in every business parking lot around.

Did anyone else go?

Linda, Thanks for the view of the fire works, almost felt like I was back home.

Bob M. If you are out there lurking, my golf game is still crap, just got back from AZ and still have not found the groove. I need strokes...

I remember going to watch fireworks at the Stalight Drive in when we were young. Got to drive a 51 Hudson in the parade today in Laurel...for a little town it was a huge parade...tons of kids to throw candy & bubble gum to....started at noon & we weren't done til 1:30

Talk - I remember the parades when I lived in St. Charles, MO. I lived very near the tourist traps so the parade went right in front of my 2nd story apartment. I could watch the Shriners in their little cars going up on first the left wheels and then the right ones. No crowds for me - just hang out my bedroom window and yell. I have a collection of Mardi Gras necklaces, too, and ALL I did was yell - fully dressed - and they loved throwing them up to me!

Bill & Bob - it's starting to sound like my mother could take you both without any strokes. Is this a ploy to get the rest of us to think we have a shot against you guys?

I watched the fireworks in Addison Texas on Tuesday night. They have a wonderful fireworks show there. I had to work at the airport on the 4th but I did see fireworks from 15 different areas between 9 pm and 10:15 pm although all I could hear were jet engines. It used to be the same at the St. Louis airport - I could see them from a distance in 10-15 places but couldn't hear them.

I'll see you at the reunion.

Larry

One of our dogs, Pipi, absoultly love fireworks. She gets so excited and jumps up into the air as if she were trying to chase them. Just mention the Forth of July or fireworks and she looks up expecting to see sparkling lights. She also knows what christmas is....presents for Pipi. She thinks anything from UPS is a present to open.
One of our other dogs, Lily, is terrified of the sound of fireworks and jumps into my lap and trembles.
Even though fireworks are illegal in Georgia, some folds in the neighborhood had some nice displays.

I had a wonderful July 4th in Ketchikan Alaska. Their hometown parade almost brought tears to my eyes of small hometown events. As I watched, I remembered our Alton parades each Fall. If I recall, our high school band won first place one year, as we put a swing step to our march. Mona, do you remember that? It would be considered our modern day step dance teams. Anyway, they had reunion groups spaced out from 40, 30, 20, 10 years, including the upcoming graduating class represented. Bill, you wouldn't be happy, as CocaCola had a truck represented, throwing t-shirts to the crowd....no Pepsi truck in sight. My favorite was when all the "hogs" came rolling thru, blasting their pipes. Anyway, Happy Belated 4th!

Sheri I actually went on an Alaskan cruise in Ketchican with My mom an dad my sisters and all of folks grand kids in 2000, and when I walked off the cruise ship there was a Pepsi banner welcoming Bill Robinson and family ! I think someone warned them I was on the boat LOL. Timing is everything. I will pass on your note to the guy who runs Alaska and let him know our distributor there let us down. Did you try to climb the totem pole in town? lol

I do'nt think I"ll even recognize Bethalto. the last time I was in town, I do'nt think there were any businesses on that road! What's the population now? I think when my family moved there it was around 3500. When Mom & Daddy moved away it was somewhere around 9000 maybe? Can't imagine what it must be like now. I was amazed when I came to the 25th(?) reunion at the growth but it must really be something now. Can't wait!
