OK, splain it to me Lucy. I will be the first to say I am clueless.Oh Steve D. by the way, your old home place and my favorite bubblegum store are up for sale. You know that the old cafe' across from the old HS has been a private home for years now, it looks good.It was rehabbed by Russ Gentry. Miss the store though.

I never heard of Todd Snider...thanks for the link. Too, early to get into all those links this morning.
Hey Debbi, Russ Gentry, is that Dan Gentry's little brother? Didn't they go to school with us?
If that's them, they used to live across the street from me, on Circle Dr., where the old County Cop Shop was.

Thanks, Debbi. I liked the bubblegum, too. Super Bubble and Bazooka, especially. Long story, but I stood outside the old store and took a picture a few years ago and ended up inside the apartment at the high school end. The guy who lived there drove up, eyed me suspiciously until I explained why I was there (no picture of the outside of what used to be the Little Store, my family's store, etc.), and he invited me into his place. Lynn, my wife, sat scared in the van because she had no idea what was going on. Thanks for remembering the joint. And I did hang out at the old cafe too, but I remember it as a malt shop with a jukebox and a pinball machine.

Rich, it is Dan G little brother and I think Dan lives on one of the streets, Harvel or Prospect but they both grew up across the highway from me next to Bible Baptist Church which is next to the old Meyers Welding.Several blocks from where Lois grew up on Blair st,a couple blocks from Claude Downing on N. Williams.....Whew! I miss the little store.

I remember the little store well but even better the cafe. The cafe was built in 1962 by my father. At that time it was called Ediths Malt Shop. The upstairs is where we lived until 1969 when we sold it to Jack. It was a great place to live. Yes there was a juke box and 2 pinball machines. Hamburgars and Fries, chilli and sodas. And the best memories a girl could have of her childhood. On the highschool sidewalks I learned to roller skate, ride a bike, played football with my brothers, and baseball on the front lawn. After a highschool football game we would get up early on Sat take our wagon and go under the bleechers to pick up the soda bottles. We took them to the little store and Bill gave us 2cents apeice for them. Oh the good ol days.

Patty, I didn't realize you lived in town. I know many do but sometimes I dont recognize people especially when their last names are different. How lucky you were to get to live at the cafe.I almost bought it after it was renovated just cause it was sooo kool.

I would love to see it now, but then again, maybe I should just keep my memories of things the way they were. After we sold the cafe we moved to Holiday Shores where my dad built anothr house. I had to go to Edwardsville School. It made me physically ill to leave Bethalto. A year and a half there and then we moved back to Bethalto and lived in that pink house that sat beside Romas pizza. It was great to be back home. My dad built 4 houses in Bethalto and 1 in Holiday Shores. He did not build the pink one. Yuk a pink house.
